Named one of the best books of 2020 by Smithsonian Magazine, the best-selling book All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis is now available for purchase in paperback form. 

All We Can Save is a collection of writings, from poems to essays, by 60 women at the forefront of the climate movement who are “harnessing truth, courage, and solutions to lead humanity forward,” reads the anthology’s official webpage. The contributors range in age, race, geography, and expertise, from scientists, lawyers and architects, to artists, poets and designers. The book itself was curated and edited by Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Dr. Katharine K. Wilkinson.

“A mosaic that honors the complexity of the climate crisis like few, if any, books on the topic have done yet,” wrote Rolling Stone’s Phoebe Neidl in last year’s story on the book’s release. “[It’s] a feast of ideas and perspectives, setting a big table for the climate movement, declaring all are welcome.”

All We Can Save offers a unique perspective on the climate crisis, solely from a woman’s vantage. But that of course does not make the ideas or solutions of a single-minded monolith. “There is a renaissance blooming in the climate movement: leadership that is more characteristically feminine and more faithfully feminist, rooted in compassion, connection, creativity, and collaboration,” reads the book’s webpage. “While it’s clear that women and girls are vital voices and agents of change for this planet, they are too often missing from the proverbial ‘table.’ More than a problem of bias, it’s a dynamic that sets us up for failure. To change everything, we need everyone.”

Brooklyn native Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson is a marine biologist, policy expert, and writer. She is a co-founder of the climate initiative The All We Can Save Project, founder of the non-profit think tank Urban Ocean Lab, and co-host of the podcast How to Save a Planet. She most recently appeared alongside Billie Eilish on Nike’s new web series Talking Trash, where the two discussed the many actions and changes we can take in our everyday lives to help protect the planet. 

A homegrown Atlantan, Dr. Katherine Wilkinson is also a writer and climate expert. She’s written a handful of books, including The Drawdown Review, the New York Times bestseller Drawdown, and Between God & Green. In addition to co-founding The All We Can Save Project with Dr. Johnson, Wilkinson also co-hosts the podcast A Matter of Degrees with Dr. Leah Stokes. 

In an exclusive interview that accompanied Rolling Stone and Neidl’s 2020 piece, Dr. Johnson further explained how the book came to be. “Knowing that [the contributors] weren’t each going to stop and write their own book, and that books are still one of the primary means to be considered a thought leader, we thought, ‘Well, let’s create an anthology and we’ll bring the book to them and we’ll bring their collective, phenomenal insights to the world.’ How insane to leave at least half the brainpower of the planet out of the conversation, right?”

As mentioned, All We Can Save not only includes a spectrum of viewpoints, but also different forms of literature. “There’s a tenderness and also a ferocious love that comes through in the essays for sure. And then it’s so beautifully highlighted in the poetry,” explained Dr. Wilkinson in Rolling Stone. “And we also knew that people were going to need space to breathe, to kind of have a pause between the essays, feel their feelings, know that they’re not alone, and then dive back in.”

All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis nourishes maybe our most deeply depleted resource — hope. Absolutely, there’s still so much to be done to save and protect our planet from climate change, but collectively, and with the compassion and counseling of our female thought-leaders, we’ll build a better future for generations to come.
