Natural Fiber Welding (NFW), the company behind plant-based leather alternative MIRUM®, is taking things to another level. While it already emits around 10x less greenhouse gas emissions than leather and fossil fuel-based leather alternatives during the production of its flagship product, its joining forces with sustainable industry leaders to make it the most low-carbon and traceable version ever developed.
Together with Stella McCartney, Allbirds, Pangaia, and Reformation, NFW will develop MIRUM with a Climate Beneficial™ cotton lining originating from the California Cotton and Climate Coalition (C4). By teaming up with these different entities, NFW aims to significantly reduce its product’s environmental footprint and lead in regenerative agricultural practices.
“Since I launched Stella in 2001, I have dreamed of a plant-based alternative to leather created in harmony with nature. MIRUM is that vegan vision brought to life – so realistic without any plastic, on a regenerative cotton backing that helps to improve biodiversity and soil health while sequestering carbon to fight climate change,” said Stella McCartney.
“In collaboration with SOS Fund, my hope is we can bring this incredible material innovation to an industry-wide scale and inspire other fashion houses to join our conscious movement; one that crafts uncompromising, desirable products that do not harm animals and give back to Mother Earth.”
To guarantee this next step is carried out correctly, back in September NFW joined the C4, an 11-company-strong alliance that spans various industries. This coalition is forging a new production method that aids in restoring soil health, developing relationships with farmers, balancing carbon cycles, and transforming the material economy to work along with the earth’s natural systems.
“We partnered with C4 to work side by side with leaders who are making the transition to regenerative agriculture in the textile industry and fashion space possible,” explains NFW Vice President and MIRUM General Manager Oihana Elizalde. “The partnership allows NFW to deliver a product that sets a new sustainability standard towards reversing climate change and we’re so appreciative of our brand partners who make this all possible.”
This is yet another exciting development in Natural Fiber Welding’s project, and surely won’t be the last innovative step it takes in its journey for better materials for the planet. If you’re interested in learning more you can check out NFW’s website for more information.
