When thinking about sustainable clothing items, underwear might not be the first thing that pops to mind, but the reality is that there are plenty of options out there that use eco-friendlier materials.

Take Nike’s new men’s SS22 underwear collection. For this year’s spring collection, the sports apparel giant took on the task of redesigning a few of its undergarment models. Placing sustainability at the forefront, the Swoosh uses materials that are a minimum of 75% recycled fibers, aiming to cut down waste and the brand’s carbon footprint.

The collection is composed of three different models, the Essential Micro, the Ultra-Stretch Micro and the Elite Micro. These pieces all have sweat-wicking properties and different levels of stretch, providing tailored support, depending on the workout intensity.

While they do have some similarities, they also have details that set them apart. The Essential Micro is made with a smooth microfiber that has flat seaming to prevent chafing; the Ultra-Stretch Micro is high stretch made with soft brushed fabric and has wide hems to prevent bunching up; and the Elite Micro was made with 4-way stretch and developed for the highest intensity activity.

These new pieces are part of Nike’s Move to Zero initiative, which is Nike’s journey towards zero carbon and zero waste. By reaching these goals, the program aims to protect the future of sports. Within this initiative, Nike offers the Reuse-A-Shoe program, which recycles worn sneakers into Nike Grind, and the Refurbished program, which offers open box footwear, lightly used shoes and eligible returns to purchase at a lower price point.

You can shop the new SS22 sustainable materials underwear on the Nike’s website, starting at $24 USD. Once you’re done with them you can always send them back to Nike for a second life as something else!
