The North Face and Online Ceramics Are Back At The (Re-)Grind
by James Roberts
Jun 15, 2023

A Tribe Called Quest had The Low End Theory. James Joyce had Ulysses. Game of Thrones had House of the Dragon. The second album, novel or, in today’s case, collection, can be make or break. And it’s made even more tricky if the first act is such a (sellout) success.

On Earth Day 2022 (yes, it has been that long), Online Ceramics and The North Face released their inaugural collaborative effort. It brought together the cute and cheerful graphic style of Online Ceramics with the performance design of The North Face. It was a collaboration we didn’t see coming, but we were oh-so-glad when it dropped.

And if the fleeces, jackets and vests weren’t enough on their own, the collection was also the first to utilize Re-Grind, a process that recycles fabric scraps from manufacturing, turning them into new materials.

Now, Chapter 2 has been unveiled. Taking on the spirit of last year’s collection, the latest capsule takes things forward with some new outdoors gear and apparel that could be suited to all seasons. Whereas Chapter 1 was focused around a color palette of blue, green, brown and white, Chapter 2 adds some purples, orange and yellows into the mix. It’s a collection that you can’t help but smile at.

Let’s dive in. There are a few outerwear options including a 1995 Polartec® Denali fleece and Windjammer jacket, and hoodies, perfect for when the nights get a little colder later in the summer. There’s also a big focus on T-shirts — long-sleeved, short-sleeved and even cropped. For your bottom half there are shorts, pants, and what look like short running tights.

Accessory-wise, there’s a wide brim hat and a hip pack. And if you’re really wanting to stand out the next time you go camping, there’s a packable Polartec® picnic blanket and storage box.

Everything is decorated with Online Ceramics’ comical, idiosyncratic and joyful graphics and slogans, like the delightful “When We Put Water for Plants They Grow”, “Forest Hugger” and “Happiness Inside”, which is written across the storage box and hip pack.

In addition to the Re-Grind textiles, performance materials like FlashDry-XD™ give the items layers of water and UPF 50+ protection.

“When The North Face was founded in 1966, camping was a fringe activity for those looking to escape through the peace and calm of the outdoors,” said David Whetstone, Senior Design Manager of Collaborations and Special Projects at The North Face. “Our Summer 2023 Collection with Online Ceramics draws on the spirit of this time with an assortment of outdoor hiking and camping products that blend The North Face’s performance DNA and Online Ceramics’ artistic direction.”

So, does Chapter 2 live up to the first? We reckon so. This is a collaboration we love to see. It perfectly brings out the best of both brands, and comes with some eco-minded materials to boot.

Keep on top of the release for this one. It’ll sell out. Fast.

The Online Ceramics x The North Face Chapter 2 collection will be available on The North Face’s website from June 23.
