The Nike ISPA Link Axis Is Taking Modular Footwear Worldwide

With the original ISPA Link having released in the US back in the summer of 2022, Nike’s innovative ISPA Link Axis – which, as far as we’re aware, is yet to make its official stateside debut – is now rolling out further afield.

Bringing the modular sneaker to a global audience, the shoe – designed to be taken apart and easily recycled – landed at Tokyo’s atmos store on August 11th and has now also arrived at UK retailer END., having appeared relatively quietly over the weekend.

To those who remember what the ISPA Link Axis looked like when the sneaker was first announced, the version that’s showing up now may come as something of a surprise. While the construction appears to remain the same – same bubble-style sole, same lacing system and same modular assemblage – that original, ultra-bold colorway is yet to make its debut. Instead, we have a “White / Orange / Yellow” version that could almost be described as lowkey by comparison.

According to END., the material make-up hasn’t changed either with the Link Axis following the usual ISPA format of elements that are recycled and recyclable. The upper, for example, is recycled Flyknit (100% recycled polyester), the TPU cages – which are essential in keeping the modular construction held firmly in place – are made from 20% recycled TPU, and the EVA sock liners are crafted from 10% recycled materials. The midsole even makes use of cast-off material from recycled airbags.

It’s been over a year since the shoe was first announced – and yes, if you were hanging on for that rainbow colorway then you’re still out of luck – but the appearance of the ISPA Link Axis on shelves and feet across the world is something worth waiting for.

While the ISPA range remains comparatively niche compared to other Nike sub-brands, the start of a potential global rollout for one of its most progressive creations is a positive sign for the mainstreaming of Earth-friendlier footwear concepts and for the future of the footwear industry. With the backing of Nike’s worldwide reputation and infrastructure, these ideas stand a much higher chance of taking root.

The ISPA Link Axis in “White / Orange / Yellow” is available from selected retailers as of now, priced at £110 GBP (roughly $150 USD) at END. Clothing.
